Character Creation

How to make a super-hero character!

Updated 2025-07-28

There are just a few parts to a Hero Instant superhero character.  They are:

Superhero name and non-superhero identity.  You can be as detailed as you like for this step.  Some groups like to create a lot of background detail for their characters, but others like to give ’em just a name and some powers and get right into the game.

Three Hero Traits that describe what it is about you that makes you do heroic things, or describes what you’re like while you’re being heroic.  These are things that you will use to role-play your character, or use as reasons for making decisions for your character.  You’re meant to use these over and over, so make them fun!

Three Drama Traits that describe the complications that can ramp up the drama of a story.  Maybe you have an ancient Aunt to take care of, or maybe you have a drinking problem, or maybe you’re blind, etc.  These are things that you can give to the GM when you really need to make a successful roll of the dice, and then that GM can use against you later.

Some number of Powers selected from a few themed Power Sets.  The number of powers and the number of Power Sets to choose from will be determined at the beginning of a campaign.  If you’re playing new heroes who have just gotten their powers, you might have just a few powers from a single set of powers.  Or, maybe you’ve been heroes for a good long time, and so you have more powers from a larger selection of Power Sets.

The Powers and Power Sets you select will determine your basic Ability Scores, which equal the number of dice you’ll roll when taking an action that uses that Ability.  Normal humans have a ‘2’ in each of their Basic Abilities.  Heroes’ Ability Scores start at ‘3’ and can be modified up and down by the Powers and Power Sets.

Example: Animus is a ‘monster’ from the frozen tundra who is really all warmth inside!  he has just 7 powers, so is not very powerful yet!
